16-ft vs. 20-ft Gooder Box: Which Size Do You Need?

One of the first questions we get on the phone is, “Which size do I need?” It’s a fair question. Pick a box that’s too small and you’re scrambling on moving day. Pick one that’s bigger than you need and you’re giving up driveway space for no reason.

We keep our mobile storage simple with two sizes: the 16-foot Gooder Box and the 20-foot Gooder Box. Here’s how they compare and how to figure out which one fits your move, remodel or storage project.

Larger homes or full garages may need two boxes.

Both boxes are the same height and width. The only difference is length, and those four extra feet on the 20-foot box add up when you’re packing a whole house.

When the 16-Foot Portable Storage Box Makes Sense

The 16-foot Gooder Box is 16 feet long, 8 feet wide and 8 feet high. Typically fits 1 to 2 bedrooms, up to about 1,200 sq ft. It’s comparable to a 10×10 to 10×15 storage unit or a 20-foot moving truck.

It’s usually a good fit for:

  • Condos, apartments and smaller homes
  • Partial moves, when some of your things are going ahead and some are staying behind
  • Decluttering or staging a house before you list it
  • Seasonal gear, like the summer-to-winter swaps we wrote about in our mountain-home seasonal storage guide
  • Tighter driveways, where a shorter box is easier to place

When the 20-Foot Portable Storage Box Makes Sense

The 20-foot Gooder Box is 20 feet long, 8 feet wide and 8 feet high. Typically fits 2 to 3 bedrooms, about 1,200 to 1,600 sq ft. It’s comparable to about a 10×15 storage unit.

It’s usually a good fit for:

  • Full moves out of a family home
  • Homes with a well-stocked garage, shop or a lot of outdoor gear
  • Remodels where most of a house has to be cleared out
  • Anyone who’d rather have a little room to spare than play Tetris on moving day

What About Bigger Homes?

Larger homes or full garages may need two boxes. Call us at (970) 510-6464 and we’ll talk through what you’re moving and what fits.

Questions That Help You Pick a Size

Square footage and bedroom counts are a good starting point, but every home is different. Before you call, think about:

  • The big stuff. Sectional sofas, pianos, gym equipment, workbenches and large patio sets take up more room than the bedroom count suggests.
  • The garage and storage areas. A full garage, basement or shed can add a lot to a move.
  • What’s really going. If you’re downsizing, selling furniture or leaving things behind, you may need less space than you think.
  • Your timeline. If you’re storing things for a while between homes, you might want a little extra room so you can stack carefully and reach what you need.
  • Your space. A longer box needs a longer spot. Think about where it will sit on your property.

If you’re stuck between sizes, give us a call. We’d rather help you get it right the first time.

Planning Your Spot

Whichever size you choose, a mobile storage box needs a reasonably level spot like a driveway or a gravel pad, plus clear access for our truck and trailer. We handle the driving, and our remote-controlled delivery bot sets the box down level right where you want it. If you’re in an HOA, check their rules about where a box can sit and for how long before you book.

Built the Same, Inside and Out

Every Gooder Box, 16-foot or 20-foot, is a secure, weather-resistant box with stainless hardware, a corrugated ISO-style roof that sheds rain and snowmelt, and an insulated spray coating on the interior roof that helps keep summer heat down. Both load at ground level with less than a 6-inch step, so there’s no ramp to climb. Double swing doors with a 5’8″ wide x 6’6″ tall opening. See full sizes and specs.

Contents protection is available through Storage Protectors, a third-party program, along with a container damage waiver.
