Storage for Mountain Homes: A Seasonal Guide for Aspen, Vail & Glenwood

Living in the mountains means living by the seasons. The bikes and paddleboards come out in May, the skis come out in November, and somewhere in between there’s usually a remodel, a rental turnover or a houseguest who needs the spare room. Mountain homes are beautiful, but they’re rarely big on storage, and garages fill up fast.

Here’s how folks in Aspen, Vail, Glenwood and the towns in between use a Gooder Box to keep up with the seasons, plus a few tips to make it easy.

Why Mountain Homes Run Out of Room

A lot of homes up here were built for views, not closets. Condos come with a storage cage if you’re lucky. Older homes have small garages, and newer ones fill up with gear. Then add the things that come with mountain life:

  • Ski, snowboard and snowshoe gear in winter
  • Bikes, rafts, camping gear and patio furniture in summer
  • Furniture that gets swapped between a full-time home and a second home
  • Everything that has to move out of the way during a remodel

A mobile storage box gives you a whole extra room you can keep in the driveway or have us take back to our yard.

Seasonal Portable Storage: How It Works in Aspen, Vail & Glenwood

There’s no Gooder Storage yard in Aspen or Vail. Those towns are served from our Glenwood Springs yard at 4067 County Road 154, the closest Gooder Storage yard to them. From there we serve Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, New Castle, Silt and Rifle, plus Vail, Edwards, Eagle and Gypsum. More about our Glenwood Springs yard.

It works like this:

  1. We drop off your Gooder Box. We handle the driving with our truck and trailer, and our remote-controlled delivery bot sets the box down level right where you want it.
  2. You load it on your own schedule. There’s no truck to return and no rush.
  3. Keep it or send it back with us. Leave it on site, or we pick it up and store it at our Glenwood Springs yard until next season.
  4. We bring it back when you need it. Next season, the gear comes home.

You can get to your box when you need it, and after-hours visits are scheduled with us ahead of time.

Four Seasonal Ways to Use a Gooder Box

1. The summer-to-winter gear swap

This is the classic mountain-home move. In the fall, load the bikes, paddleboards, camp chairs and patio set, and bring the ski gear inside. In spring, flip it around. Keeping the off-season gear in a mobile storage box at our yard frees up the garage for the car again, which matters a lot when it’s snowing.

2. Remodels between seasons

Shoulder season is remodel season in a lot of mountain towns. An onsite Gooder Box keeps furniture, rugs and boxes out of the contractor’s way and still within reach. See how onsite storage works.

3. Short-term rental turnovers

If you rent your place out part of the year, a box is handy for the things you don’t want guests using: personal items, extra linens and seasonal decor. It also helps when you’re swapping out furniture between rental seasons.

4. Second homes and part-time residents

Second-home owners often store a season’s worth of belongings between visits, or move furniture between a full-time home and a mountain place. A box at our yard means you don’t have to fill the condo’s closets with things you only use three months a year.

Planning Around Snow and Access

Winter delivery takes a little more planning in the mountains. A few general tips:

  • Pick a level spot. The box needs a reasonably flat place to sit, like a driveway or a cleared pad.
  • Keep the path clear. Make sure the driveway and the spot for the box are plowed or shoveled before delivery day, with room for our truck and trailer to get in.
  • Check your HOA. Many mountain neighborhoods and condo associations have rules about where a box can sit and for how long. Check before you book.
  • Leave some slack in the schedule. Storms can change plans fast, so build a little flexibility into your timeline.
  • Book early. We like a few days’ notice, though sometimes we can do the day before or even the same day if you call.

Packing for the Seasons

Mountain weather swings a lot, so pack with that in mind. These are general tips, not guarantees:

  • Clean and dry gear before it goes in, especially bikes, tents and anything that’s been out in the mud or snow.
  • Use sturdy plastic bins with lids for smaller items, and label them by season so the swap goes fast.
  • Keep things off the floor with pallets or shelving if you can, and leave a little air space between items and the walls.
  • Think twice about storing things that are very sensitive to temperature changes, like certain electronics, candles or aerosol cans.
  • Put the things you’ll want first, like next season’s gear, near the doors.
